Nitrous oxide (N₂O), also known as laughing gas, is a colorless, slightly sweet-tasting gas in the gaseous state at room temperature. It has a mild anesthetic effect and was one of the earliest gases used as an anesthetic.
In the medical field, nitrous oxide is widely used as an anesthetic and analgesic. It is particularly commonly used in dental surgery. In the food industry, it is used as a foaming agent and preservative. In rocket propulsion, nitrous oxide is used as an oxidizer.
