Helium

Helium is the second most abundant element in the universe and the lightest noble gas. Its exceptionally low boiling point of −268.9 °C — just 4.2 K above absolute zero — makes it the only substance capable of maintaining the superconducting state in MRI magnets and particle accelerators. Airocean supplies high-purity helium across eight grades, from industrial 4.5 through ultra-low-impurity 6.0 LC, ensuring the right specification for every downstream application.

In semiconductor manufacturing, helium serves as a carrier and cooling medium in CVD/PECVD chambers, and as a primary purge gas for quartz-tube diffusion furnaces. Its extraordinary thermal conductivity and inertness allow precise temperature control without chemical interaction with process wafers. High-purity 6.0-grade helium is mandatory for EUV lithography equipment purging to suppress UV absorption by residual oxygen and water vapor.

Aerospace and defense programs rely on helium to pressure-feed liquid-propellant rocket engines, purge cryogenic tanks, and pre-cool hydrogen fuel systems. Its low density and chemical neutrality make it the gas of choice for helium mass spectrometer leak detection — a technique capable of locating leaks smaller than 10⁻¹⁰ mbar·L/s in vacuum systems, spacecraft structures, and industrial process vessels.

Fiber optic cable manufacturing employs a continuous helium atmosphere inside the drawing furnace to control thermal gradients and reduce microcracking in the silica preform. Helium's low viscosity enables efficient heat extraction, resulting in fibers with tighter diameter tolerances and improved tensile strength.
